      About this tool

      What it does

It tells you whether the night will be good for observing from your location: dark-night hours, hour-by-hour clouds, the Moon, visible planets and a sky map. The calendar for the next 12 months (eclipses, oppositions, elongations of Mercury and Venus, meteor showers, equinoxes and solstices) exports to your calendar as .ics.

      The calculations

Dark night: the Sun is more than 18° below the horizon. An hour counts as clear below 30% cloud cover. Positions of the Sun, Moon and planets, phases and eclipses: astronomy-engine, on your device, even offline.

      The sources

Clouds, temperature and dew point: hourly forecast from Open-Meteo, which receives coordinates rounded to about 10 km. Meteor showers: usual peak date of each shower.

      Which planets are visible tonight?

Those that rise above 5° (Mercury, Venus), 10° (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) or 15° (Uranus with binoculars, Neptune with a telescope) while the Sun is more than 6° below the horizon. To point at them, see live altitude and azimuth.

Will the sky be clear tonight?

The timeline gives hourly cloud cover from Open-Meteo; an hour counts as clear below 30% cloud. For a photo session, see moonless nights and framing for astrophotography.

      Is an aurora possible?

It depends on the Sun's activity, not just on the clouds. The Kp needed from your location is on the page northern lights and Kp index.
